Spanish pelotaris in Cebu take on local players

THIS bit of news should provide big source of excitement for avid jai-alai fans.

A legendary cancha master, along with a slew of high-caliber pelotaris from Spain, are scheduled to play a series of matches against their Filipino counterparts next month.

Dubbed “Australia 2004 Battle of Champions,” the event will be staged on Thursday and Saturday at the New Cebu Jai- Alai Arena in Mambaling, Cebu City.

The legendary Alberdi 1 – widely regarded as the top jai-alai player in the world – is scheduled to arrive in Cebu tomorrow, along with big-name Spanish pelotaris Iriondo, Garai Mikel and jai-alai icon Aitor Totoricaguena, president of Eusko Basque, one of the principal sponsors of the event.

Totoricaguena was the world pelotari champion from 1970-77.

The Spanish visitors will go on a guided tour going to Mandaue City, Consolacion, Liloan and Mactan Shrine and Cebu Beach Club in Lapu-Lapu City on Wednesday, before taking on local players on Thursday.

In the duplas event, the Spanish vistors will play against Flipino stars Merson, Estipona, Socrates, Ricky and Quijote, currently the top player in the country.

The event, which is sponsored by Spanish companies Bainet Television and Eusko Basque, is open to the public without charge, although betting is strictly not allowed. GCM
