UV, USC win in ML Kwarta debut
THE University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers debuted as expected by taking it hard in the final quarter to beat the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Baby Panthers, 78-64, in the opening day of the 2nd ML Kwarta Padala Cup Summer League at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.
The University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, on the other hand, banked on a game-winning basket by John Rafael Flanco to beat the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 59-58, in the main game.
UV trailed the entire first half but overpowered the smaller Baby Panthers, who succumbed to the Baby Lancers’ half-court press.
Final-quarter collapse
With Earvin Dennis Ferraren finding his mark early, USP took the lead after a quarter and managed to keep it until the end of the third period despite the strong effort of the heftier and taller Baby Lancers.
However, things went sour for USP in the final frame when it failed to adjust to UV’s swarming defense. USP was limited to just nine points in the final 10 minutes while UV scattered 25 points in a deciding run.
Forward John Cell Jessie Cañada led the Baby Lancers with 22 points, while Jonah Patrick Avila added 14, and Phil Mercader contributed 10.
Ferraren was the lonesome Baby Panther to score in double digits as the sweet-shooting guard tallied a game high 28 points.
In the other game, USC took a cue from the explosive tandem of Robert Genes Codilla and Giovanni Padillo in the second quarter to seize control of the ballgame, erecting a 50-33 lead going to the final quarter.
But the Baby Jaguars suddenly found their rhythm behind Anecito Lapiz, who scorched with 12 fourth-quarter points to take USJ-R to a 58-57 lead in the final seconds of the game after huge 25-7 run. However, Flanco, who tallied eight markers in the third canto, sank his lone field goal in the fourth that bailed out the Baby Warriors from total embarrassment.
During the opening ceremony, Cebu City Councilor Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem, the City Council’s Committee on Professional Sports, Games and Amusements chairman, spoke of his deep appreciation for the program initiated by the M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MLSDF) to help develop Cebu’s young players.
