Call center companies to seek more workers
Those hoping to get a high-paying job at a call center should look no farther than Ayala Center Cebu, where top information technology (IT) companies will converge this weekend in the hope of getting more employees to staff their ever-growing operations.
Odette Jereza, chairperson of the Amazing Job Race, said the three-day job fair will start this Friday at the Ayala Activity Center.
Speaking during a press conference at Table 7 yesterday, she said the idea for the Amazing Job Race came after the Academic Consortium for English Proficiency was thinking of a way to find “10,000 employees for the call centers in Cebu.”
The Amazing Job Race is among the activities slated for this Friday’s grand salvo of the Cebu Business Month (CBM) 2005 spearheaded by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The job race will be participated in by universities like the University of Southern Philippines, University of the Visayas, University of Cebu, University of San Jose-Recoletes and University of San Carlos, and IT companies, including Convergys, Sykes, People-Support, Western Wats and Bigfoot Global Inc.
The grand salvo will begin with a motorcade at 10 a.m. from Ayala Center to the uptown area, followed by a program at 11 a.m. at Ayala Activity Center.
At 3 p.m., TV personality David Celdran will host Whiz Quiz, which will be participated in by college students from eight schools majoring in IT courses.
Francis Monera, overall chairman of the CBM 2005, said the CCCI is gradually increasing awareness of the annual event in other parts of the country.
Last February, the CCCI had a roadshow in Glorietta in Manila to drum up interest in the CBM 2005, particularly its activities like the Regional Tourism Congress, Cebu ICT 2005 and the SME Link Cebu 2005, all of which will take place this month.
Carmel de Pio-Salvador, consultant for the CBM 2005, said the sports events included in the CBM are also national in scope now, with people from outside Cebu joining them. The mountain biking and badminton events have been held. The golf event, which will take place later this month, will have participants from India who are coming here for the Cebu ICT (information and communications technology) 2005.
She said more businessmen in the country were now giving the CBM more notice after the CCCI last year invited three taipans—Lucio Tan, Andrew Gotianun and John Gokongwei—and awarded them for their contribution to the Cebu economy during the Grand Chamber Awards.
Salvador also cited Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia for helping to raise the profile of the CBM. Garcia joined all the tourism events for this year’s CBM, including the three-weekend Suroy Suroy sa Sugbu to showcase the attractions of the various towns in Cebu. (CTL)
