Talk back: Filipinos to emulate By Jose R. Gapas Cebu Uniting for Sustainable Water
When the report that the Supreme Court gave special benefits to four senior officials, including the son of Chief Justice Hilario Davide, Jr., I felt let down.
To me, Davide is the embodiment not only of a hardworking, patriotic, courageous, honest and dedicated public servant but also a selfless one. So I surmised that a son working with him as an official confidante would be like him.
Thus I was glad to read in Sun.Star Cebu later that Davide’s son turned down the allowance. My perception of the character of the chief justice was vindicated.
“Joseph Bryan Hilary Davide, staff head to his father’s office, has excluded himself from the grant of a special allowance to certain high court officials, equivalent to the amount received by other chief offices, which is charged against judiciary savings.
“The chief justice inhibited himself from the deliberations on the grant of these allowances.”
What a sense of “delicadeza”! If only others in public service were like the chief justice and his son, the Philippines would not have been the second most corrupt country in Asia. The Philippines would not have been poverty stricken. There would have been not much suffering among our people.
And we would have had a higher self worth and greater sense of dignity as a people. We would have been prouder. We would have been standing taller as Filipinos.
