Speak out: Support for the Ruiz couple By Marites Quirino Siy Magallanes Village, Makati City
I laud the courage and determination of the Ruiz couple in seeking justice for their daughter.
I am also a mother of two kids. Because of the nature of my husband’s job, we go to Cebu at least a twice a year. Cebu is a second home to us because of its slow-paced way of living.
Last Holy Week, a business associate of my husband who is a member of Casino Español brought us there. Indeed, it is a beautiful sports club, at par with the ones in Makati and Alabang (where we have bought membership shares) in terms of aesthetics, though not in safety and security regulations.
Since my kids wanted to take a dip in the pool, my husband’s friend told me to make sure the lifeguard was around. He then told me about that incident when a girl drowned in the pool.
Since I did not want to take chances, I sought assistance and a certain Mister Suerte approached me. I asked if he was a lifeguard. He said, “No,” though he enrolled in a course in a school in Cebu. Then I asked if he had a license. He said, “No.”
That irritated me, so I asked more questions. He said he provides towels to guests and help them if they need assistance.
This was contrary to the claim of Bunny Pages “that they have been very prudent in exercising safety measures in the club.” Pages, if indeed he chairs the club, should open his eyes wider.
For such a prestigious business establishment, Casino Español should have a licensed lifeguard and trained personnel. It owes it to its members who pay a high membership fee.
Again, I sympathize with the Ruiz couple for the meaningless death of their child. I sincerely pray for the family in this painful emotional struggle. My family supports you in this case.
