Boxing scam is Buhain’s acid test
Games and Amusements Board (GAB) chairman Eric Buhain is facing a new challenge as the country’s top regulator of professional sports, and that is to trace and curb the latest controversies currently troubling the country’s boxing scene.
A scam using the name and record of another boxer to book a fight aboard has become the main concern of Cebu managers and matchmakers nowadays.
Cebu based
Tata Polinar has not been the only boxer victimized by the latest fiasco, but a few Cebu-based boxers as well.
The names and records of Edmund Velayo, Dondon Sultan and Robert Allanic were also used in a fight in Thailand that they never even knew existed.
“The GAB knows the people involved in this controversy but it needs a political will to pinpoint them in public. They need to stop this foolishness because our boxers here are often used by these people,” said Cebu boxing impresario Rex “Wakee” Salud in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu.
Salud helped the Cagayan de Oro-native Polinar get a fight in Tokyo, Japan this Saturday. Last May 27, he was reported to have fought and lost to former WBC flyweight champion Medgoen Singsurat by knockout.
At that time, Polinar was training at the RWS Gym for Saturday’s fight against Manabu Fukushima.
Names
“We have to be careful right now. The names of my boxers Velayo and Sultan and Allanic were all used by another boxer,” said Gello-ani. In the case of Velayo, Gello-ani clarified that the Thai matchmaker failed to replace his name to Nonong Deliberes.
“Velayo was recommended to fight for the Paba title but he was not available as he was still in Indonesia. It later turned out that Nonong Deliberes replaced him with the knowledge of the GAB. However, the promoters and matchmakers in Thailand failed to replace his name, resulting to an incorrect report by Boxrec.com,” Gello-ani added.
Gello-ani said that Sultan’s name has already been used twice while Allanic, who is still trying to establish his name in professional boxing circuit, has also been used. (RCM)
