Springdale places third in San Carlos

Luck deserted the Paref-Springdale Under-15 squad as it ended up third in the San Carlos City 7-a-side Invitational Tournament over the weekend.

The six-team tournament saw the top four finish in reverse order with top qualifier Sudecor ending up at fourth place and No.4 Colegio de Santo Tomas-Recoletos winning the crown, 2-1, over No.3 qualifier JP Print House.

“We were unlucky. It really wasn’t meant for us,” coach Mario Ceniza said.

Springdale, the Red Ribbon U-15 Youth Cup champion, finished second in the eliminations after going undefeated in six matches. Springdale drew four matches and defeated JP Print House, 2-0, and Sagay City, 1-0, with goalkeeper Paolo Pascual scoring the goal in the dying minutes.

“We were running out of time, so I told Paolo to attack,” Ceniza said.

In the semifinals, Springdale again met JP Print House, but this time the result was different as the former lost, 1-3, via penalty shootout.

“We were attacking but we couldn’t score, so we went into penalties.

The top qualifier, Sudecor, also lost so our match for third place was like the championship,” Ceniza said.

In the playoff for third against a team that had five players from the 2005 Palarong Pambansa champion, Bran Go scored the lone goal to give Springdale the win.

Ceniza said the team will come back to San Carlos City on July 1-3 for a bigger tournament. “They invited us for their charter day, so maybe we will join in all age groups,” Ceniza said. (ML)
