Tourist arrivals rise 11% in RP

—Visitor arrivals in the Philippines for the four months to April rose 11 percent from a year earlier to 734,156, the tourism department said Thursday.

US nationals comprised the largest share of 21.6 percent, followed by South Koreans with 17.3 percent and Japanese with 16.3 percent.

Chinese visitors made the largest jump in numbers, rising 105.1 percent over the past year to 26,487, the seventh largest group of arrivals by country.

This year, the Department of Tourism aims to draw 2.5 million tourists.
The country drew about 2.4 million tourists last year.

The long-term objective is to bring in five million tourists annually by 2010.

Cebu province expects to participate in a big way in this tourism expansion.

This is why Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza has called for the construction of a new international terminal at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Last year, the Mactan airport served 2.03 million domestic and 578,206 international passengers. (AFP/CTL)
