Close to 'home'

Comfort food, in the middle of the “desert”, is just what Keith Aparri Bacalso ordered.

Suddenly, you are in the middle of the Savannah and you find yourself quite hungry. And you’re thinking, “Uh-oh, what’s on the menu? Exotic meat and grass?”

No, this isn’t Africa, and yes, this is the Plantation Bay where buildings, pools and entertainment areas are named by the letters of the alphabet (think Alcatraz to Zimbabwe, though I’m not sure whether I got A and Z right). And unlike the sun-grilled African savannah, this one comes with air-conditioning.

Perfect for my-stomach-is-already-rumbling moments, serving time in the Savannah Grill zips past snail-paced restaurants. Convenient for those lazy-famished afternoons when you forgot to eat your lunch on schedule because you fell asleep by the pool.

You need food – lots of it and obviously, quick, too. Good thing the menu looks quite familiar, none of those his-sounds-delicious-let’s-try it belch! exotic food – you find burgers and fries instead, and they come quick, too.

You are, after all, in a vacation of sorts – not in some reality TV game show where food is scarce, serving size is small, and where you get an exotic cuisine challenge for lunch.

Besides, the point is, you cannot go wrong with comfort food. And what? With burger-chains dotting the globe, chances are, no matter where you come from, the concept (more importantly, the taste) of a burger is bound to be familiar.

Takes the challenge out of having to pick what food would suit you and the fast-food generation kids (children is the proper term, Sarah, who walked with us from Mogambo to Orion, would point out). I could relate, with a picky palate as a - (pause) - child, my sister used to have to buy me burgers whenever the family dined in some Chinese restaurant.

Smack in the middle of Savannah, your palate says you are close to home.
