Escapee couldn’t stand pals’ teasing that his wife was being unfaithful By Mia E. Abellana Sun.Star Staff Reporter
The inmate who scaled the walls of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPRDC) was arrested in Camotes Island Thursday night, nearly a week after he escaped.
Hector Recaña, 38, was reportedly in bad shape after jumping off the walls of the facility.
According to SPO1 Danny Arcena of the San Francisco Police Station, Recaña’s waist, knees and soles were swollen and bruised.
That’s the reason he did not budge when policemen, Acting CPDRC Warden Alfredo Abella and Capitol Executive Assistant Edwin Mixdon arrived in Sitio Nunok, Barangay Union to arrest him in his uncle’s house at 7:30 p.m.
A barangay tanod informed the police about the fugitive’s presence.
Recaña told police he had been bothered by teasing from fellow inmates.
They allegedly ridiculed him that his wife was fooling around with somebody.
“Inig lakaw kuno sa iyang asawa, upat na ang tiil kay duna na kuno’y kabit,” Arcena said.
Bad landing
Recaña no longer cared what happened to him as long as he left the facility.
Pretending to be a kitchen boy, he scaled the walls and jumped, landing on the ground hard.
He ran all the way to the Guadalupe Church and hailed a taxicab.
Recaña, who was said to be a well-known thief in Cordova town, reportedly went straight to Camotes Island where he has several relatives.
In a separate interview, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said they have been coordinating with Recaña’s family and the law enforcers tracked him down.
Garcia, who was visiting Camotes yesterday with Education Secretary Florencio Abad, said Recaña’s mother even asked for her assurance that her son would not be harmed.
CPDRC security consultant Byron Garcia said they placed Recaña in an isolation cell to keep him away from other inmates who were angered by the suspension of their visits because of his escape.
Back in jail
Jail warden Alger Comendador and seven jail guards were also relieved of their duties, as a result.
Recaña admitted in the investigation that when he got out of the jail compound, some civilians helped him in going to San Francisco town, said Byron, the governor’s brother.
He said Recaña’s escape proved the jail guards’ failure to follow security procedures.
The governor said criminal charges will be filed against those who helped Recaña in his escape last Saturday.
SPO1 Arcena said one of Recaña’s cousins kept informing police about his presence in the area, but when they went to arrest him, he already left for Leyte Province.
His relatives did not want him around because they felt uncomfortable with policemen asking for his whereabouts.
Recaña was quoted as saying that he did not regret escaping from CPDRC, but he willingly went with the arresting officers.
The governor, upon learning of his condition, instructed them to take him to a hospital to have him checked before taking him back to the provincial jail. (With LLV/AIV)
