Speak out: Church and split Cebu issue
By Jolly L. Benitez
Sikatuna St., Cebu City

The clash between the anti and the pro split-Cebu camps continues. While debate is the essence of democracy and is therefore a necessity in resolving the split-Cebu issue, the public has not been insulated from the hidden evil agenda of warring politicians.

Those favoring to divide Cebu anchor their argument on better management and additional resources as among the major advantages in creating three more Cebu provinces.

They also have an ax to grind against Capitol for its unfair and biased treatment and distribution of government funds and projects among various towns in Cebu province.

These arguments have obvious loopholes.

For one, the national treasury is on the verge of bankruptcy. Putting up additional provinces means additional budget, and we don't know where to get the money.

And assuming that we can get the resources needed for new provinces, it
is doubtful whether the Cebuanos will ever benefit from them knowing that our politicians have brought this country to a shameful tag as the second most corrupt country.

I suspect, this move is meant to camouflage the real evil intent, which is to divide, rule and loot.

On the other hand, those opposing the split can not use the above issues to lash back at their opponents without getting hit, as they obviously also have their own political itches to scratch.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Vidal is opposing the split, but is dissociating itself from any political group.

The Church and anti-split Cebu camp may be waging the same fight, but for entirely different motives and reasons. The Church speaks to its flock, as a shepherd, concerning the religious and moral implications of the controversy, while the anti-split Cebu camp speaks in order to defend and eliminate threats to its political turf.

Cebuanos should be suspicious of the pro and anti split-Cebu camps. In this case, their only refuge is the Church.
