Bata, Django win

Efren Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante moved to the second round of the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour Manila Leg in contrasting styles at the Robinson’s Galleria yesterday.

The legendary Reyes, owner of three leg titles last year, easily defeated Luong Chi Dung, 9-4, to arrange a second-round clash with Au Chi Wai, who escaped with a 9-8 win over Muhammad Zulfikri.

Despite playing a jittery Kou Po Cheng, Bustamante found himself in trouble before winning, 9-7.

Errors from both players had them tied at 3-3, and a Cheng miss on a bank on the two allowed Bustamante to take the lead at 5-4.

Another miss on the five ball in rack 10 gave Bustamante a two-rack lead before the boyish looking 27-year-old leveled the match when Bustamante scratched on his break.

The match was tied at seven apiece when luck swung Bustamante’s way.

The cue ball flirted with the side pocket before settling for a good lay on the two as he took an 8-7 lead, while Cheng scratched on his break to allow the Pinoy cue master to take the match.

Bustamante will next face Patrick Ooi Fook Yuen, who defeated Wanshan Poomjaeng.

Other Filipinos winners were Gandy Valle, 9-5 over Chan Keng Kwang; Antonio Lining, 9-4 over Yudarman Kamarudin; and Ronato Alcona, 9-8 over Toh Lian Han.

Ramil Gallego was the lone casualty after losing, 4-9, to Lie He Wen. (ML)
