Serna: Direk Laurel has a winner in ‘Nasaan Ka Man’

She was sorely missed during the Kapamilya weekend in Cebu more than a month ago. She was somewhere else shooting delicate scenes of a project, which is slated as one of the 12th anniversary presentations of Star Cinema.

Just when other happenings in show business hugged the limelight, Claudine Barretto suddenly barged into the scene by winning a Best Actress plum during the Luna Awards (formerly the FAP awards) for her sterling performance in the movie Milan.

The limelight has never left her even as the opening of her latest starrer draws nearer and nearer. Claudine shares center stage with two of local filmdom’s most sought-after leading men in the persons of Jericho Rosales and Diether Ocampo.

The movie in which they star together is Nasaan Ka Man, which is scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide on Wednesday, June 15. For the movie’s promo, the trio visited Cebu yesterday with a mall show at the SM City Cebu entertainment plaza.

Completing the cast are tested thespians Hilda Koronel, Gloria Diaz, Dante Rivero and Katherine Luna. Jericho, loaded with acting competence, plays the usual suave gentleman he has been known for on and off screen.

Diether here proves he, too, can be versatile by portraying an offbeat role, something that can be described as a first in his long movie career. He has daring scenes here with the equally talented (an award-winning actress in international film fests, no less) Katherine Luna.

Speaking of senior actresses, who refused to be outshone and eclipsed by their younger co-stars, one can count on Hilda and Gloria to be just that. With their camera-friendly facial features alone, plus their acting talent, no one can simply ignore their screen presence.

Hilda is one of local filmdom’s beautiful faces - from her teenage years until the present. And while many Filipinas have tried their best to follow in her footsteps and bring home another international beauty title, Gloria simply enjoys having preserved her allure and elegance, which brought pride and honor to the country more than three decades ago.

Like Hilda and Gloria, Dante has proven time and again that it will
take more than just youthful looks to sidetrack this talented artist.
With these qualities, director Cholo Laurel is confident that he has a winner in his hands.

So, if you feel you’re slowly succumbing to stress and other pressures, do see a movie to relax and also play a part in making the local film industry stay alive and kicking.

An unscheduled visit to the Soundtraxx Production Studio, of the husband and wife team of Gani and Gloria Villarojo in Brgy. Tisa, due to the persistent coaxing of friend Jun Cabillar, exposed this columnist to the challenge and joy of composing a song. We witnessed how the written word is given the appropriate melody, arrangement, accompaniment and everything so it can become a “finished product.” It was a collaboration of four musically inclined, yet rarely tapped talents.

The following night, another unscheduled visit led to more revisions of the same song, until finally the four collaborators decided that it was the music that the group commissioning it wanted.

The song will become the background music of the production number during the Miss Toledo City 2005 beauty pageant on Saturday, June 11.

Choreographer-director Doy Arradaza, who commissioned the job, was reportedly satisfied with the outcome and was enthusiastic in giving the corresponding choreography when he dropped by the studio for the song.

Hopefully, this will mark the beginning of more collaborations in the future. O-ha! Who knows a new horizon will be opened?
