Another man shot 9 times in summary killing
By Jovy S. Taghoy
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

A resident of Barangay Pasil, Cebu City was gunned down vigilante-style last Tuesday night, but the victim’s wife pointed to a policeman as the one behind the killing.

Buenaventura Bacante Gaviola, 40, who lived on T. Cavan St., became the 62nd fatality in similar attacks in Cebu City since December.

He died of nine gunshot wounds.

Homicide investigators are still trying to identify the two assailants, but Gaviola’s wife, Teresa, in a radio dySS interview last Tuesday night, identified a policeman assigned at the San Nicolas Police Station as the mastermind.

Sun.Star Cebu is withholding the policeman’s identity pending his comment on the allegation.

The perpetrators, who arrived on a red motorcycle, concealed their faces with bonnets and helmets. They also wore brown jackets.

Gaviola, who was also known as Bawen, was drinking beer with two friends when the attackers on a red motorcycle stopped near him about 10 p.m. on F. Rallos St., Suba, a barangay adjacent to Pasil.

The rider then shot Gaviola several times with a pistol that was reportedly equipped with a silencer.

The men immediately fled toward L. Flores St., while Gaviola was taken to the Cebu City Medical Center.

Gaviola died before reaching the hospital.

Homicide investigators SPO3 Zenaido Pastorfide and SPO1 Rey Cuyos, SPO4 George Aniñon of the Security and Service Group, a Pasil resident and personnel from the Scene of the Crime Operation led by SPO3 Virgilio Bagasala found four slugs and five empty .45 shells at the crime scene.

SPO1 Cuyos said Gaviola reportedly had no criminal records and had not been jailed.

Pasil Barangay Captain Romeo Ocarol, in a separate interview, supported Cuyos’ statement.

Insp. Mario Monilar, Homicide Section chief, is considering inviting the policeman to answer Teresa’s allegations.

Monilar, however, said Teresa needs to file a complaint so they will have a basis to summon the policeman for an investigation.
