Daanbantayan residents oppose Cebu split: survey

Surveys conducted on residents of Daanbantayan’s 20 barangays reportedly show they are against the move to create new provinces in Cebu.

Each barangay captain presented to Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday papers that were reportedly signed by residents and indicated whether they were for or against dividing Cebu.

Some barangay captains said that at least 85 percent of the residents in their barangays are opposed to the plan, while other village chiefs said that 92 to 100 percent of the respondents in their areas were against the creation of Cebu del Sur, Cebu del Norte and Cebu Occidental.

Also yesterday, more than P76 million worth of projects were inaugurated, a development that Mayor Ma. Luisa Loot said would bring in at least P6 million more in revenues annually to the town.

Survey

Daanbantayan is part of the nine-town fourth district, which Rep. Clavel Asas-Martinez seeks to convert into a new province.

In Barangay Malbago, where Provincial Board (PB) Member Jose Ma. Gastardo comes from, 435 residents signed the column under “Supak” (opposed to the plan), while only eight signified their support for the move.

Gastardo earlier voted for the PB to support the bills that Martinez filed along with Rep. Simeon Kintanar of the second district and Rep. Antonio Yapha of the third district.

Also yesterday, Garcia gave P1.19 million in financial assistance for the different projects of the barangays.

The town’s new market, a bus terminal, and some bridges were also inaugurated.

The five-building new market and the bus terminal are expected to generate income for the town, said Loot, through a projected P261,337.50-collection from stall rentals and terminal fees.

Garcia lauded the Municipal Government for the projects. She reiterated her thrust to help empower the towns with economic enterprises so they will not rely entirely on their share from the country’s Internal Revenue Allotment.

Ro-ro port

She also announced that the construction of a roll-on roll-off port will start this year in Barangay Maya, which will open the town to the neighboring islands such as Masbate and Leyte.

Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Felix Guanzon, in his speech, also announced the plan to put up an airport in Daanbantayan. (JPM)
