Jewelers keep slate clean in Leyte
The M. Lhuillier Jewelers picked their second win proving they too can run and gun after routing Greatest Philippines Insurance, 119-94, in the 2005 Sogod, Leyte Foundation Day Invitational basketball at the Sogod, Leyte Gym.
Keeping a five point-lead at the end of the first quarter, Lhuillier coach Eddie Ybañez went to Aldrin Ocañada, who broke the game wide open as the former University of the Viasyas Green Lancer exploded with six triples, starting in the second quarter.
The Jewelers were up by 14 at the bend, 62-48.
But the Insurers, a collection of former Salazar Institute of Technology players, were still in the game as Ronald Paraiso, Ronan Isidro and Benjie Tomaquin responded to the Jewelers’ attack. However, when James Laygo joined the scoring spree, the Jewelers unleashed a deciding 41-23 binge for the rout.
Laygo scored all his 15 points from beyond the arc, while Ocañada topped all scorers with 27.
Woodrow Enriquez, Leo Bat-og, Jun Cañoneo, Leodi Garcia and Carlos Sayon also finished in double digits, combining for 57 points in the Jewelers’ second win in as many games.
