Lina elected new BAP prez
The Basketball Association of the Philippines yesterday installed Laguna Gov. and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Joey Lina as its new president.
The rest of the elections were still being held at the Manila Hotel at press time yesterday. Former president Tiny Literal was named BAP chairman.
Christian Tan, BAP executive vice president and spokesman, said during a break in yesterday’s emergency executive board meeting, that the election of former senator Lina is expected to trigger a major shake-up in the organization in its effort to bring all stakeholders of the sport under one roof.
“This is the start of our effort to reach out to all those who love basketball. The BAP’s doors aren’t closed to those who want to help as long as they’re sincere and there is mutual respect,” said Tan.
Lina’s involvement with sports development has been extensive. As a senator, he established the “Create A Sports Hero” program, in which the biggest beneficiaries were the athletes in the 1991 Manila Southeast Asian Games, where the Philippines hauled 91 gold medals and placed second behind champion Indonesia’s 92 golds.
As Laguna governor, Lina put the province in the Philippine sporting map as its powerhouse delegation won almost every multi-event competition it joined, including the Palarong Pambansa and the Philippine National Games.
Technology
As Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary, he signed a memorandum of agreement with the BAP calling for the distribution of basketball technology to the remotest areas of the country.
“This is the reason why Sec. Lina has always been a part of the BAP family, precisely because of that DILG-BAP pact,” said Tan. “The agreement with the DILG exists up to this day through the various basketball clinics that the BAP is conducting via its officiating arm – the Basketball Referees Commission.”
Announcement
Lina and Tan are expected to make an official statement today while announcing the other newly-elected officials of the BAP.
Meanwhile, the Fiba-Asia yesterday sent a congratulatory message to the BAP for its successful hosting of the Fiba-Asia Champions’ Cup, which saw Qatar emerge as champion.
In a letter sent to the BAP office, Fiba-Asia Sec. Gen. Yeoh Choo Hock expressed his “appreciation for a successful championship.”
