Guardo may go to court; ‘ego’ hit by rival group
By Mike T. Limpag

Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) chairman Jonathan Guardo is considering filing charges against the leader of the “breakaway Team Cebu City” delegation to this year’s International Children’s (ICG) Games in Coventry, England.

“I have instructed my staff to consult with the City Attorney for legal actions against this guy,” Guardo said.

Guardo is referring to a “parent of a swimming athlete,” who according to the CCSC has usurped his authority by forming a delegation to the Games without informing him.

Guardo challenged the leader of the group last Tuesday to come out and answer the issues raised against him.

However, in a separate interview, the leader of the group said they are still “focusing on the preparations and we will answer him in due time.”

“Let’s not add fuel to the fire for the sake of the children,” he said. “What is more important, his ego or the children,”

Asked if he is willing to meet with Guardo for a dialogue, he said, “Why should I? In his case, he didn’t even consult us, he immediately went to the media.”

However, the individual added that they are still not sure whether they would push through with their participation this year.

Late last year, Guardo decided not send a delegation to the ICG in Coventry after organizers told him they had no slot for Cebu City, but was surprised when a delegation was formed last month without his knowledge. The group included Team Cebu City (TCC) athletes in swimming, table tennis and lawn tennis.

The lawn tennis team of coach Fritz Tabura later backed out, followed by the CCSC declaring it will expel the athletes from the TCC program if they push through.

Guardo said that what he is doing is for the welfare of the children.

“We are really concerned because these are TCC athletes. Last year in Cleveland, we had the involvement of the Filipino community,” Guardo said.

“If only he consulted us first, but he didn’t show us any respect,” Guardo said.

Guardo will meet with parents of the table tennis athletes early next week to explain his stand.
