Kiamco slips through
By Mike T. Limpag

Warren Kiamco advanced to the next round after surviving a tough 7-6 win over Violito Catingan in yesterday’s opener of the 4th Sun.Star Superbalita 9-Ball Challenge Class A competition sponsored by TM Touch Mobile at the SM City Trade Hall.

“I was pressured,” Kiamco admitted after the closely-fought match.

The 28-year-old Talisay City-native Catingan won the leg and cleaned the first rack before a dry break in the next rack allowed Kiamco, who hasn’t played in Cebu for years, to even the match, 1-all.

Tied after 10

The match was still tied after 10 racks before the two showed their defensive game with a series of safeties on the seven, which Kiamco won for a 6-5 lead. In the next rack, Kiamco bungled his shot on the four to allow Catingan to level the match.

“When I missed the four, I thought I had lost,” Kiamco said. “He was making good shots,”

However Catingan’s good shotmaking didn’t include his break as he came up dry again in the final rack. Kiamco sank the one and pulled a brilliant safety on the two, which he sent to the opposite upper rail and had the cue nestled close to the three.

Catingan managed to hit the two off a bank but the cue ball went straight to the bottom pocket to pave the way for Kiamco’s win.

“I’m still adjusting to the surface because in Manila we play on a different cloth,” he said.

Other results

In the other matches, Tata Villarasa defeated 20-year-old Oliver Yap, 7-2, while Lito Diga rallied from 5-3 down to beat Achilles Navarra, 7-5. Ricky Zerna also won over Bernard Marabella, 7-5, while Panfilo Damu-ag scored a 7-0 rout over Vincent Lopez.

Previous champions Dennis Orcullo and Antonio Gabica were seeded to the last 16 together with last year’s runner-up Lee Van Corteza and San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour Manila leg champion Ronnie Alcano.
