India to work with RP on infocom ventures

India’s National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) is looking forward to working with the Philippines to further develop the information and communications technology (ICT) industries of both countries.

While acknowledging the presence of competition between the Philippines and India, Nasscom president Kiran Karnik said the two countries can complement each other to to serve as many multinational companies (MNCs) as possible.

“We may compete with each other in certain areas, but we can have joint ventures and share the benefits,” he said through video conference technology during the opening of the International Conference and Exhibition on Business and ICT 2005 (Cebu ICT) at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino yesterday.

Nasscom is India’s premier trade body and the chamber of commerce of the information technology (IT) software and services industry in India.

Karnik indirectly urged the Philippines to install and implement anti-piracy laws, saying the security of data is one of the reasons why many MNCs trust India to do their back-office operations such as accounting, payroll and IT.

“We always see to it that the quality of our services is high. (We value) security and protection of intellectual property,” he said.

Strict

In the same event, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Juan Santos said the DTI will continue to work toward the strict implementation of intellectual property rights (IPR) laws in the Philippines to encourage MNCs to outsource their business operations to the Philippines.

Karnik said the Philippines and India can work together on providing disaster recovery of company data by serving as backups to each other.

The exchange of ICT skills is also another area of possible cooperation.

“The Philippines has just developed its IT sector, while we (India) began 15 years ago. India needs your updated IT knowledge—software and technology—while you (Philippines) also need our (expertise),” he said.

This is the reason Karnik suggested making the movement of people from India to the Philippines and vice-versa easier.

Some software makers in Cebu earlier said they would not partner with players in India if they would serve only as the Indians’ outsourcing firm.

“We don’t want to be an extension of their services. We want to become direct partners of MNCs,” according to a source.

Meanwhile, Sen. Manuel Roxas II urged the private sector, especially the small and medium enterprises, to harness the potential of IT in their businesses.

“Barriers in the global economy are going down due to IT. IT levels the playing field,” he said.
