Prohhorov: Health is definitely wealth
By Gina Prohhorov
Great potentials

This is a cliché. This may even sound boring. No impact.

But if you stay almost two weeks in a hospital, observing all the patients there, then you will realize that you would rather be a healthy average income earner than be a rich patient in the hospital.

For two weeks, I was with my four-year-old kid at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute in Quezon city. She was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome – a kidney malfunction causing renal disorder.

If she were an adult she would have to undergo dialysis, but she is only four so all her medications had to be through intravenous means.

Of course, all the injections were traumatic for her, so were her screams which traumatized the doctors, too.

After a week, she was back home only to have a relapse again, so another five days of confinement.

When she would be napping in the afternoon, I would leave the yaya with her so I could go to the chapel on the second floor. To go there required for me to pass rooms where I could see all these adults and senior citizens undergoing dialysis.

You saw all sick patients with their tired relatives beside them.

What a sorry state. When I went back to our room, I passed the long line of people in front of the pharmacy. At the end of the corridor was also the long line of relatives paying their bills at the cashier.

What a waste of hard-earned money. Of course, if you are the relative, there is no choice but to save a life.

That is exactly what we had to do. It is even an irony when doctors give their long list of dont’s. No more salt, no more fatty food, no more junk food, no ketchup, no black sauce, no artificial flavored juice, no spaghetti, no noodles, etc.

For such a cheap price of salt you end up paying so much for too much salt in the body.

For those who are sick and especially for those who are not sick, prevention is the cure. Lifestyle check is needed for a healthy body.

Are you fond of salty food? Are you fond of fastfood? Are you fond of toyo, patis? Are you fond of noodles?

Well, when I saw all those sick adults, I thought I would not want to spend my retirement pay for the hospitalization. I would not want to be old and sick. It is enough to be old, but sick, no way! Well, at least no weekly dialysis, please. So, no, I decided not to use salt but only salt-free ingredients. I just follow what the doctors prescribe for my sick daughter to be sure.

I hope this “sharing of my experience” would help you be more aware and conscious of your lifestyle. I know it is easier to say “Yes” to a little child who is begging for a pack of chips than to say no. But think twice.
