Alcano ousts Kiamco
By Mike T. Limpag

The semifinal cast of the 4th Sun.Star Superbalita 9-Ball Challenge is an odd cast, and its not because all four were seeded.

The first semifinal match-up features Antonio “Gaga” Gabica and Dennis Orcullo, the 2002 and 2003 winners of the tournament, while the other pairing features Ronnie Alcano and Lee Van Corteza.

Alcano was the 2005 San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Manila Leg winner, a title the Davao bet Corteza won a year ago.

Alcano defeated the pride of Cebu, Warren Kiamco, 11-6.

“Whoever has the better luck will win this match,” the 35-year-old Kiamco said before the start of their match.

Kiamco earlier defeated Leondardo Didal, 11-8, while Alcano defeated Israel Rota, also with an 11-8 score.

Sweat

Gabica had to survive a tough Jimmy Adonia, 11-10, in the last 16 before dispatching Eljon Abellana, 11-3, in the event co-presented by Touch Mobile.

Gabica was sweating after leveling the match at 10-all and gave the table back to Villarasa after a bungled safety left the one open. Villarasa managed to sink the one but bungled his shot on the two.

“I thought I already lost, good thing he missed,” Gabica said after the match.

Corteza bottled up Panfilo Damuag Jr., 11-7, in the last 16 and Ricky Zerna, 11-3, in the quarterfinals.

A total of P270,000 in cash prizes are up for grabs in the competitions, which include Class B, Women’s, High School and Elementary categories.

Also on tap today is the 1st Sunstar Superbalita International 9-Ball Challenge featuring former World Pool champion Mika Immonem and former European champion Marcus Chamat against Corteza, Orcullo, Gabica, Alcano and Kiamco.
