Japan seeks veggies

JAPAN is now more open to importing vegetables, as its domestic vegetable production has been falling due to the decline in the number of farmers and their increasing average age.

According to the Japan External Trade Organization, domestic vegetable production in Japan fell 20 percent from 1990 to 2002.

As of September last year, vegetable imports reached 1.93 million tons, almost reaching the 2.53 million tons imported in 2003.

Japan imports bamboo shoots, sweet corn, mushrooms, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, garlic, green onions, broccoli, cabbage, head lettuce, carrots, asparagus, eggplant, ginger, pumpkins and other prepared vegetable products.

The Philippines is one of the major exporters of asparagus to Japan. JBN
