Pay tribute to Cardinal Sin, mayor asks Cebuanos

CALLING the late Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin a great Filipino hero, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña called on the Cebuanos to pay tribute to the cardinal for upholding democracy.

Osmeña said Sin could be considered “the greatest Filipino hero,” although he said he does not mean to belittle Dr. Jose Rizal and other heroes of the country.

“If you want to even compare him (Sin) to Jose Rizal, Rizal had a bigger sacrifice but he didn’t bring democracy to the Philippines. Cardinal Sin brought freedom and democracy and that’s a very big accomplishment,” the mayor said.

Osmeña said the Manila archbishop is worthy of praise for fighting for democracy without bloodshed.

Key role

Sin led millions of Catholics in the country not only in fighting for democracy but also in opposing birth control and the US-led war in Iraq, among other controversial issues.

He also played a key role in numerous religious activities in the country and in Rome, as well as in the People Power revolts that removed two Philippine presidents.

“Sin did not sacrifice as much as Rizal did but from one standpoint, he may be the greatest Filipino hero because he really delivered. There are so many heroes who died but did not deliver, this guy (Sin) did,” Osmeña said.

Contributions

Sin succumbed to kidney problems at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center last Tuesday morning. He was 76.

In a news conference yesterday, the mayor also asked the Cebuanos to give the cardinal credit for all his accomplishments and contributions to the country, “but let’s not belittle the sacrifices other heroes made.”

Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal is reportedly scheduled to leave for Manila on Sunday to say mass and pay his last respects to the former Manila archbishop. LCR
