BI allows Taulava to play
MOMENTUM maybe on the side of the Shell Turbo Chargers in their best-of-five semifinals series against the Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals but the former face a huge problem, a 6-foot-9 big problem – Paul Asi Taulava.
This as the Bureau of Immigration unraveled its stand that it recognizes Taulava’s right to resume playing for the Phone Pals in the PBA.
The BI’s stand is similar to that of the Department of Justice (DOJ).
In an order dated June 21, Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez said that his bureau has “no objection” and “allow herein” Taulava to play (in the PBA) “in accordance with the endorsement of the Secretary of Justice and the order of the Court of Appeals.”
Endorsement
Fernandez’s order concurred with the June 20 endorsement of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez of Taulava’s return to the PBA in recognition of his “right to a means to life.”
In his endorsement, Gonzalez apparently gave weight to Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Eric Buhain’s sub-joint letter, which stated that the license issued Taulava was that of a “Filipino professional basketball player,” based on the GAB’s records.
Buhain even wrote Gonzalez a letter “to confirm the professional license issued to him (Taulava) by the GAB in order for him to play in all the games in the PBA or in any other league supervised by the GAB.”
Last June 7, the seventh special division of the Court of Appeals unanimously declared that Taulava is a Filipino citizen under the provisions of the 1973 Constitution, until proven otherwise in court. JSV
