Charges against Nodalo go unresolved
By Mia E. Abellana
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

Before the name Rey Torres became “popular” when it came to high-profile robberies, there was Joel “Tongol” Nodalo.

Police blamed Nodalo for most of the bank robberies in 2001 and described him as the local contact for Mindanao-based robbers. He was also named one of Cebu City’s top drug pushers.

Though he has denied knowing Torres, police said it was Nodalo who posted bail for Torres.

Both were identified in the robbery of Agencia Mejor Pawnshop and Hi-Precision Diagnostic Laboratory last month.

Nodalo was born on Sept. 28, 1975. His parents, Isidro Sr. and Cristita, are lechon vendors in Barangay Ermita.

Nodalo stood 5’5” and weighed about 180 lbs. He finished his elementary years at the City Central Elementary School and spent his high school years at the University of the Visayas.

He had four children, three of them by his wife Janice.

At the time of his death, Nodalo faced two cases of possession of illegal drugs and a case for illegal possession of firearm filed by the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau.

He also had two robbery cases in different salas.

Nodalo was arrested in Escalante, Negros Occidental on Oct. 2, 2002 for driving a stolen Mitsubishi Adventure.

During a tactical interrogation on March 24, 2003, Nodalo pointed to suspected Kuratong Baleleng member Felix Al-os as the one who masterminded the eight-man jailbreak at the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center the day before.

Nodalo, Al-os, Reil Bautista and two other inmates shot a jailguard and bolted out of the jail.

The Lapu-Lapu City Police arrested Nodalo at a checkpoint last year for possession of a firearm.

The arrest warrant in last month’s Agencia Mejor robbery had yet to be released while police have yet to file a case against Nodalo and Torres for the Hi-Precision robbery.

Police records state that Nodalo’s older brother Isidro Jr. has a snatching syndicate in the Carbon area and has participated in shooting rampages in Barangay Ermita.
