Shooting claims life of 1, injures 3 others By
Oscar C. Pineda Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Two unidentified men fired at a group drinking in Barangay Looc, Lapu-Lapu City yesterday, killing one and injuring three others.
Although the victims were not members of a fraternity, a logo of a fraternity can be seen in their drinking area.
This led police to believe the incident may be a case of mistaken identity.
Homicide Chief Francisco Baguio, in his report, identified the fatality as John Michael Booc Samson, 22; and the injured as Glen Dihayco, 24; Emerson Berdin Mozo, 25; and Harold Esmalin Dihayco, all residents of Barangay Looc.
Recovered shells
Police recovered from the scene 27 9mm. shells and two shells from a .45 pistol.
A witness said that around 12:20 a.m., two men alighted from a motorcycle that stopped in front of the group and started shooting the victims.
The two then fled towards Barangay Babag, where police found the motorcycle.
The witness said the gunmen both wore a black T-shirt and a ball cap, while the driver donned a white shirt.
Based on gun bursts heard by nearby residents and the number of shells recovered in the scene, police believed that one of the gunmen used a subma-chine gun.
An Ingram and an Uzi also uses 9mm bullets, but a policeman who asked not to be named said a Danao-made submachine gun, locally known as TIC 9, is a favorite of criminals.
Samson died upon reaching the hospital, while his three companions are undergoing treatment for several gunshot wounds.
Police believed that victims were mistaken for fraternity members.
Not frat members
Investigators noted the logo of Alpha Kappa Rho painted on the wall next to where the victims were drinking. The logo is visible to passersby.
But not one of the victims belong to a fraternity, said PO3 Manolito Abellanosa.
PO1 Janew Villame said the follow-up operation they conducted after the shooting resulted in the recovery of the getaway vehicle: a 100 cc Honda Wave.
Police traced its registered owner to Frederick Acain Bentoy of Barangay Basak, Mandaue City.
Police have yet to establish Bentoy’s involvement in the crime. He and his parents went to the police station yesterday to claim the motorcycle, which the police had impounded.
