Asiana to start flights to Cebu from Korea

Asiana Airlines will start its four times’ weekly direct flights between Cebu and South Korea on July 16.

By that time, the P83-million asphalt overlay of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport runway will have been completed, said General Manager Adelberto Yap of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA).

The asphalt overlay conducted by Socor Construction will restore the airport runway to international standards.

Myung-Hwan Yu, Korean ambassador to the Philippines, told Sun.Star Cebu that both Asiana and Korean Airlines will be operating direct flights between Mactan and South Korea because of the increasing number of tourists.

Yap said Korean Airlines may start flying the Incheon (Seoul)-Cebu-Incheon route by Aug. 1.

Korean Airlines is the fourth company to open new direct flights to Mactan. The other three are Asiana, Mandarin Airlines and Far Eastern Airlines. Mandarin will fly the Taipei-Mactan route.

Yu believes that Korean arrivals to the Philippines will hit the half-million mark in the next five years.

In 2003, the number of Korean tourists exceeded 100,000, Yu said, surpassing the number of Japanese tourists, who have traditionally been the top foreign travelers to Cebu.

On the other hand, lawyer Augusto Go, the Philippines’ honorary consul to the Republic of South Korea, said some Koreans came to Cebu as tourists and later on, as businessmen, after finding business opportunities while visiting different areas.

Go believes that the increase in foreign tourists may also raise foreign investment in the country. (EOB)
