Wenceslao: GMA, ABS-CBN and a widow
By Bong O. Wenceslao

Actress Susan Roces as this country’s next president? I’m not joking.

In an interview with GMA 7’s Arnold Clavio after she appeared in a
boisterous press conference last Wednesday, the wife of the late Fernando Poe Jr. confirmed her readiness to take the post, “sa tulong ninyo” or words to that effect. So very trapo already?

It now looks like another widow is raring to follow the route taken by Corazon Aquino, who led the opposition against then president Ferdinand Marcos after her husband was killed in 1983 and eventually became president in 1986. With voters biased for wives running in lieu of their dead husbands, a Roces presidency is not farfetched.

Or so that is what the political opposition is thinking. I mean, I could not help but agree with a political scientist who analyzed Roces’ statements in that presscon and in her subsequent media interviews.

Most of her words were clearly not her own—either some politicians fed these to her or she is now part of a political planning group.

This is what I meant about President Arroyo stumbling into the trap laid down by the political opposition and destabilizers. Her recent admission on national television that she did talk with a Comelec official during the canvassing of votes in the 2004 elections is being used to stoke the fire for her ouster—her asking for apology notwithstanding.

Because of this, I have been asked by a number of people, some of them with worried looks on their faces, if Arroyo can survive until her term ends in 2010.

My answer is the same: if she plays her cards right, she can. An uprising is not something her critics can summon in a jiffy.

Besides, people are suspicious of the political opposition.

But if the situation worsens, there is also the option of resignation.

Which means her partymate, Vice President Noli de Castro, a former top gun of ABS-CBN network, should take over (he is not in the Garci tapes, remember?). Which brings me to the joke. When that happens, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo or GMA will be replaced by ABS-CBN.

TEXTREAX. Texter Albert Paras of Lahug, Cebu City claimed jueteng whistleblower Sandra Martinez Cam is a relative of former congressman Celestino Martinez, Jr., husband of Rep. Clavel Asas-Martinez. I actually don’t have a way of confirming that. But Paras commented: “This explains the actuation of Clavel.”
