Vidal’s Singapura By Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano
In a recent issue of Time magazine, a news item from Singapore was inviting artists, intellectuals and professionals to work and settle in the Merlion state.
Heeding that call, Vidal “Ondo” Alcoseba Jr. went. On his return home from a successful solo exhibit in that city-state, he left the mark of Philippine modernism on its soil and brought home a memorable experience, aside from snapshots. His exhibit was held at Annie Chen’s Works of Art store-cum-gallery with no less than the Philippine Ambassador Belen Anota in attendance.
We know of Ondo’s adeptness and mastery, which have no limitations for he’s good in both the conservative and modernist painting styles. But at his debut solo in Singapore, he opted to bring Filipino modernism to his audience.
Singapore has always been a melting pot of cultures and is gearing to become a global city. In the same light, Filipino artists whose talents are comparable to the big names have imbibed globalization and are gearing to be international artists. Ondo took the right path, internationalism or global art is modern and Ondo has made a big splash. Perhaps the Filipino artist will make a stir yet.
