Costanilla: Elvis-tival!

Spotlight

CONCERT. I had a musically-enriching and delightful evening over the weekend when Bernard Pino a.k.a. Dr. Elvis did a two-hour concert to an SRO (standing room only) audience at Casino Filipino Mactan.

Pino, the Elvis Presley of Michigan, succeeded in staging the entire presentation by rendering purely Presley selections, around 24 of them. Doy Montaña and his band provided the live accompaniment. Pino did three costume changes - exact imitation of the same attire that the original rock ‘n roll king used in his global concerts. Even the trademark pair of shades, the gyrations, the hairstyle and the sideburns were evident in Pino’s show last Saturday night.

FANTASTIC. An Australian spectator spiced Pino’s concert with an unrehearsed number - and it was fantastic. In fact, he could have rendered more Presley numbers and done a back-to-back concert with Pino that night. And one of the romantic parts of the show was when Pino sang Love Me Tender and fetchedhis lovely wife from her seat and brought her in front of the audience.

ELVIS-TIVAL. Even before the show started, Montaña invited me to join him and Pino in organizing a search for Cebu’s Elvis Presleys. Initially, we thought of coining the term Elvis-tival, meaning a festival of Elvis impersonators in town. According to Montaña and Pino, the annual search could encourage those talented Cebuanos to hone their singing and dancing skills as they will be required to impersonate Presley onstage. The two gentlemen also explained that the search could even become another tourist attraction in Cebu considering that the Presley fanaticism is still alive and kicking anywhere in the world. I have committed to helping Montaña and Pino conceptualize the search mechanics and guidelines. Once we complete them, I shall have them announced here.

COMMENDABLE. It was while watching the weekly television show Jud Morning over ABS-CBN 3 last Sunday morning did I know that Romy, the gay sing-along host at Kukai’s bar, was able to build a house and send a nephew to school with his income as an entertainer. Romy proved to one and all that hardwork does pay. It’s another lesson learned and value promoted.
Truly commendable.

TOUR. Today I shall start a four-day familiarization tour of some of Negros Oriental’s latest attractions and destinations together with other local media practitioners. I readily accepted the regional Department of Tourism’s invitation to this all-expenses paid travel because as officer of the Central Visayas regional tourism press group, I am aware that this exciting sojourn is going to be another learning experience. My article on Monday shall be about this tour.
