Prohhorov: Getting wet By Gina Prohhorov Great potentials
My marketing manager gave me this topic to write about since it is rainy season. She is right in more ways than one. It is the perfect timing: some government officials are getting wet.
There are so many accusations, all these political controversies, but nothing has yet been proven. But for many, the main point boils down to the expectation that no matter what position you have, values still need to be intact.
I heard an employe say that accepting a P500-bribe should not be considered a bribe. The amount is minimal compared to a P5,000-bribe. In school, we were taught that “black is black” and that “white is white.” The equation 10x10 is 100 and never 99, even if it only lacks one more point so it can sum up to 100.
Even our own mothers always taught us to be honest; never to be half-honest. Is there such a thing? Or are you referring to a white lie? What does a white lie cover, anyway? What is the purpose of a white lie?
The issue of values is back. Good. Any employe in a government or a private firm should carry values that are intact. The higher you are promoted, the stronger you should be in having these values inculcated in your mind and heart. If not, then it would be dangerous for you to be in a powerful, influential position if you succumb to temptations.
It is unfair to judge. It is unfair to say nobody is perfect. Yet, the number one value that would lead to the road of success is the value of honesty. No bargains. No conditions. No justifications. Just complete honesty.
I know of some people who paid for their diplomas. I know of some people who even bought their thesis project. Do they go far? Well, I doubt but, of course, they spend much in paying off corrupt people left and right.
If you want to make it in life, it would still be best to have your values intact. That just means always doing what is right, no matter what. Honesty is definitely worth more than a million dollars.
So, if you do not want to get wet, keep yourself dry by arming your heart with your values. It’s similar to the idea that if you do not want to get wet out there, you should arm yourself with your umbrella.
