Carbon placed under state of calamity

The Cebu City Government may now charge the costs of repair for the Unit 1 building of Carbon Public Market after the City Council yesterday declared the area under a state of calamity.

However, as of 8 p.m. yesterday, the move to relocate close to 500 legal stallholders of the building still stands despite a meeting affected vendors had with Acting Mayor Michael Rama earlier in the evening.

Danger

The local market authority headed by Mayor Tomas Osmeña ordered the vendors to immediately vacate the building following recommendations from the City Engineer’s Office, which found that the 17 concrete posts are already exposed on all sides, posing danger to both lives and properties.

Market Administrator Elpidio Dela Victoria said the stallholders were asked to use the second level of the Unit 3 building, but the members of Carbon Market Vendors Cooperative would “rather stay in Unit 1 than sacrifice their livelihood.”

Dela Victoria said the vendors may sell in temporary stalls in front of the Carbon Police Station and the portion going to the Visayan Electric Company compound in Barangay Ermita.

Councilor Gabriel Leyson said the City Government will need about P17 million for the retrofitting of the posts.

Rama is set to meet the market authority and four contractors to discuss the proposed undertaking at 11 a.m. today. Dela Victoria said that whatever will be decided during the 11 a.m. meeting, Rama and the market authority will also meet the affected vendors later. (GAC)
