Councilors to look into traffic jam near Jesuit school

Vice Mayor Michael Rama and some Cebu City councilors now have their eyes set on the traffic mess at the Sacred Heart Jesuit School, after tackling the traffic problem near the Redemptorist Church.

Rama announced he will meet with councilors, whose committees involve traffic and police matters, and with City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) officials to discuss solutions.

Traffic is always a headache for Citom at Gen. Maxilom Ext. because of three-lane parking and vehicles fetching students from the school.

Citom earlier drew the ire of Rama and several councilors for implementing an experimental traffic scheme near the Redemptorist Church last May 4 without Council approval.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña later said Citom had his blessings, thinking they can experiment with traffic flow without prior approval from the council.

The Council stopped the new scheme last June 29.

Rama and the councilors manned traffic as part of information dissemination, and to give them hands-on experience.

Parking space

Yesterday, Rama said he will meet with Councilors Procopio Fernandez, Sylvan Jakosalem, and Raul Alcoseba, along with Citom officials, to discuss the traffic situation in the school’s vicinity.

“Only one lane was left for moving traffic. That’s why I told Citom enforcers nga dakpa na ninyo (arrest them),” Rama said of vehicles that stopped to wait for students to come out of school.

The school has been criticized for its failure to provide adequate parking space.

Rama revealed that whatever actions they will take already have the approval of Osmeña, who is on official travel to Europe. (RHM)
