Bustamante bows out By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
In A popular TV commercial, Efren Reyes told Francisco Bustamante, “Tayo-tayo rin lang ang magkikita sa finals (We’ll meet in the finals).”
In the 2005 World Pool Championships, they can change the “finals” to the sidelines after the former world No.1 Bustamante squandered a 5-1 lead to lose to qualifier Jung Ling Chang, 10-8.
Reyes had earlier bowed out of competition after failing to make it to the top four of his eight-player bracket in the group stages.
A jittery Chang missed all his first three shots as he watched Bustamante build a 5-1 lead, with the Filipino earning his fifth rack after a golden break.
Then the unthinkable happened. Bustamante bungled his shot on the nine, and Chang pocketed it for a 5-2 count.
Chang then stringed six straight racks for an 8-5 lead before making a mistake on a safety on the two in rack 14, allowing Bustamante take the rack.
After leveling the match at 8-all, Django’s safety on the one left it open and Chang calmly sank it en route to a 9-8 lead.
Last chance
Django’s last chance came in rack 18 after Chang bungled a thin cut on the one that left it partly covered by the five on the top rail. Bustamante’s one-rail gamble failed as he left the one in the pocket to drop the match.
Dennis Orcullo also packed his bags after losing to Huan Fong Wang, 10-5, while Alex Pagulayan defeated Shin Young Park 10-5 and Rodolfo Luat was flawless in a 10-1 win over Loung Chin Dong.
“It is really important here to dig in early and keep your opponent down. I’m really pleased with my performance and can now relax a bit before tomorrow’s last 32 match,” Luat told Matchroom Sports.
Luat will take on the winner of the Niels Feijen and Thanh Nam Nguyen match, while Pagulayan will face the winner of the Vilmos Foldes-Ibrahim Amir duel.
Sun.Star Superbalita Champion Ronnie Alcano was trailing 2003 champion Thorsten Hohmann, 6-5, and Marlon Manalo was tied at 3-all with Charles Bryant at press time last night.
Cebuano pool icon Warren Kiamco was still to play David Reljic, while Gandy Valle was also set to face Do Hoang Quan.
