Software industry group can use P1M for projects
Some P1 million can be tapped by the Cebu Software Development Industry Association Inc. (CebuSoft) for projects that will strengthen the organization and expand the market for software developers in Cebu.
According to Private Enterprise Accelerated Resource Linkages (Pearl) Phase 2 project field manager Ed Sutherland, Pearl 2 has signed a memorandum of understanding with CebuSoft, making the P1 million available to the group.
CebuSoft president Mike Jurado confirmed Suther-land’s statement.
“But we have to request for the funds per project, which is limited to projects such as training (for staff members) and CebuSoft’s participation to trade (fairs). Pearl 2 also requires some 50 percent counterpart for the project approved,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.
Pearl 2, Canada’s flagship project for private sector development in the country, already donated some P150,000 to CebuSoft last February, to help the organization participate in the E-Services trade fair in Metro Manila.
The organization is also shouldering the salary for one year of CebuSoft’s newly hired executive director, whose training at the University of San Carlos the Pearl 2 project also funded, Jurado said.
Commenting on the political crisis facing President Gloria Arroyo, Sutherland has said Pearl 2 is not at all bothered. He said only terrorists scared them.
The P400-million Pearl 2 Project, which is financed by the Canadian International Development Agency (Cida), was launched in 2002 through a bilateral agreement between the governments of Canada and the Philippines.
The Canadian executing agencies for the Pearl 2 Project include the British Columbia Innovation Council and British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Pearl 2 also signed an agreement with the Cebu-GTH (gifts, toys and houseware) Exporters and Manufacturers for some P1.5 million in assistance to the organization. (JBN)
