Council reclassifies Dumlog housing site

The proposed low-cost housing project in Barangay Dumlog, Talisay City is likely to proceed.

The Talisay City Council approved on third and final reading last Thursday a resolution converting a 3.3-hectare commercial lot in Dumlog into a residential area.

The lot, purchased by the Bethlehem Communities Australia for P40 million, is the project site of Cebu Dumlog Housing Village Program.

The housing project is intended for about 360 beneficiaries, 180 of them Talisay City residents.

The rest of the beneficiaries include the squatters in Inayawan dumpsite in Cebu City, as well as members of different church organizations and the Cebu Newspaper Workers Foundation (Newscoop).

Rolando “Dodong” Morallo, Newscoop housing committee chairman, is elated by the development, saying top Newscoop officials will meet next week to discuss the project.

Murallo is also Sun. Star Superbalita’s lifestyle and community editor.

Vice Mayor Aberdovey Belleza yesterday advised housing project officials to start complying with the documentary requirements for the project.

Belleza said the requirements include the preliminary approval, locational clearance and development permit from the Talisay City Government and environmental compliance certificate from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Once all the housing requirements are complied with, the Talisay City planning and development coordinator will submit the documents to the City Council committee on infrastructure.

Earlier, some councilors opposed the move of prioritizing “outsiders” or non- Talisay City residents in the resettlement project.

Others were apprehensive that Talisay City might turn into a “dumping site” of squatters from Cebu City and other areas in Metro Cebu. (GC)
