Mandaue cuts butchers’ pay after takeover
Butchers working at the Mandaue City Livestock and Poultry Complex found themselves getting paid less after the City took over the facility last July 1.
The butchers that AVM Bernardo Engineering hired were automatically absorbed as program employees of the City.
They used to earn P210 to 245 a day, but now they are paid only P185 a day.
However, City Mayor Thadeo Ouano said he is moving for the increase of the salaries of abattoir workers up to P215.
The City took over the management of the new slaughterhouse in Labogon after AVM Bernardo failed to pay some P4.8 million in rentals.
In a recent interview with Sun.Star Cebu, Ouano said he only knew of the private company’s unpaid dues when the amount became big.
The City is ready to sue the company next week so it can collect its dues.
“That was income for the City,” the mayor said.
The company leased the facility at P150,000 a month. The rent was supposed to increase to P544,000 a month on the third year until the end of the 15-year lease contract.
AVM Bernardo failed to pay its rental since October 2003, about six months after the facility officially opened.
There were reportedly no payments made until June 2005.
Ouano acknowledged AVM Bernardo’s expertise in running the facility, saying the company was qualified to do so.
Citing a study, the mayor said government-run abattoirs tend to shut down easily due to the local government units’ lack of expertise.
With the City’s takeover of the facility in Barangay Labogon, Ouano hopes it will continue to earn. (AAG)
