POC orders Chot to continue Nationals’ training
Despite the fracas surrounding the country’s umbrella organizations for basketball, including the Philippines’ suspension by the International Basketball Federation, the national training pool is bent on continuing its preparations to land a spot in the 2008 Olympics.
This as the Philippine Olympic Committee told national team coach Chot Reyes to keep his program on track to give the Philippines a spot in the 2008 Olympics, pending the result of the Fiba probe.
Explanation
POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. has been reported to have already furnished the Fiba a four-page letter last Wednesday, explaining the POC’s action against the Basketball Association of the Philippines.
Cojuangco’s letter served as a response to the July 3 communication from Fiba secretary general Patrick Baumann, who requested the POC to give a “precise explanation” of its action against the BAP.
For Reyes’ part, Cojuangco said that the Coca-Cola Tigers head coach has expressed his desire to continue with his program for the all-pro training pool despite the Fiba’s recent decision.
“Chot mentioned he’s in favor of continuing it because the ultimate goal is the Olympics in Beijing in 2008. I’m in favor of what Chot said because its different when you get to prepare your team long enough,” Cojuanco said.
“In order to achieve that, we have to have a team that is capable of winning.”
Fiba has assumed jurisdiction over the POC-BAP issue, which resulted in the recognition of the Philippine Basketball Federation Inc. (PBFI) by the POC and the placing of the BAP’s national team under suspension while an investigation is under way.
Cojuangco and POC chairman Robert Aventajado said that the Fiba investigation is welcome.
“The reason they decided in that fashion is because they’ve already heard BAP’s argument. The POC’s argument hasn’t been explained. We welcome this investigation so they can hear the POC’s side,” said Cojuangco. (JSV)
