Tribu sustains streak
By Rommel C. Manlosa

Tribu Sugbu looked like the defending champions they are again with the addition of Joseph Ronald Quiñahan in the middle.

Although foul-plagued, Quiñahan’s presence helped the Tribesmen to a 80-71 win over the red-hot Cavite Insurers and stay unbeaten in 15 straight home games in the 2005 Panasonic-NBC National Championship at the Minglanilla Sports Complex Thursday night.

Free throws

Cavite did well from the line, making 26-of-34 against Tribu’s 6-of-10, but its woeful 36 percent shooting and the non-factor 15 points of Melvin Mamaclay did them in.

After shooting 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from the stripe in the first half, Mamaclay went cold in the second before fouling out in the final two minutes.

While Quiñahan, slowed down by foul trouble, managed to make his his presence felt as he held Marvin Ortiguerra to just 11 points in 26 minutes of action. Quiñahan finished with 12 points on a 5-of-7 shooting on top of five boards, an assist, a steal and a block in 12 minutes of play.

Both teams had 20 turnovers but Tribu Sugbu got better scoring from Cavite’s errors as they made 18 points against the Insurers’ nine. The Tribesmen also shot over 50 percent (33-of-65).

After allowing Cavite to take a 9-3 lead, Tribu Sugbu rode on Quiñahan’s eight first-quarter points to take a 22-21 lead. The game only accounted for five lead changes and the Cebuanos dominated the rest of the way despite Quiñahan sitting it out for most of the time.

With Quiñahan’s trouble, Rex Mangubat stepped up as the former Universirty of Southern Philippines Panther went 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw to finish with eight points and three boards.

Rañeses

Neil Rañeses also showed signs of gelling into the system after scoring 10 points on top of seven rebounds, an assist and two blocks.

The Tribesmen erected a 46-31 lead with 2:08 left in the first quarter before Cavite got back in the game with a 9-0 run to close the half at 46-40.

However, that was the closest they could get as Alex Cainglet’s 3-pointers got Tribu Sugbu back in control with a 58-44 lead with 6:01 left in the third.

Tristan Codamon tried to rally the Caviteños back, but without little help from his teammates, the Insurers withered in the endgame.

Tribu Sugbu (80) – Almacin 13, Quiñahan 12, Cainglet 11, Rañeses 10, Mangubat 8, Guerrero 8, Bucao 7, Binongo 4, Briones 4, Pening 2, Mercado 1. Cavite (71) – Codamon 19, Mamaclay 15, Ortiguerra 11, Rodriguez 9, Abadia 6, Pañares 6, Sierra 3, Attunaga 1, Camañag 1. Quarterscores: 22-21; 46-40; 61-55; 80-71.
