Cedf-IT lauds creation of IT council

One of the key building blocks that will lend support to the full development of the IT and ITES Service Industry in Cebu is the creation of the IT Council, which the Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia announced at the closing of the recently concluded Cebu ICT 2005.

The governor, through an executive order signed last June 23, created the Cebu Provincial Information and Communication Technology Council - the first of its kind in the country. The council will provide the much-needed impetus, direction, policy, initiatives and interventions in spearheading the ICT roadmap for the entire province. The council will be composed of lead agencies of government agencies, local government units, ICT leaders in business, academe, private sector and civil society.

Apart from focusing on making Cebu an ICT investment destination and outsourcing hub, the IT Council will pursue an information society agenda - that of making ICT relevant to everyone, even in the far-flung towns and municipalities of Cebu.

The formation an IT Council was one of several cornerstone propositions that arose during the Cebu IT Summit.

Other propositions were the establishment of an industry-academe consortium for HR development (Cedf-IT) and an industry association among local ICT SMEs, (Cebu-Soft). With the three critical components for full ICT industry development in place, Cebu is “in unison geared up” to now serve the global ICT market.

In the words of the governor, “indeed government, business, the private sector and civil society — are united behind IT, and IT shall provide the engine behind this unity. IT shall be the “IT” in “UNITY.”
