Microsoft changes license to allow rental of PC units
MICROSOFT Philippines has changed a provision in its end user license agreement that bars renting out of computers using Microsoft software.
According to Microsoft’s Market Development Partner (MDP)-Cebu marketing communications manager Ivy Llena, the company has had initial talks with the members of the Internet Café Association of Cebu (Icac).
She said Microsoft has granted Internet cafés the right to rent out its services because the company has recognized the vast potential and the increasing market of Internet cafés in the country.
Llena said granting the Internet café rental right program is in line with Microsoft’s effort to educate the market on the importance of using licensed software.
“We want to establish a relationship with them so that it will be easier for us to reach out to them and encourage them to buy licensed software,” she told the press.
Microsoft Philippines has been working actively with the Business Software Alliance (BSA) to minimize, if not eradicate, the use of pirated software in the country.
Llena said Microsoft, including MDP-Cebu, constantly provides BSA, with a list of its clients and how many software they have bought for their businesses.
BSA, an international non-government organization composed of business software makers that aims to fight software theft all over the world, then writes these clients and inquire how many computers they have to compare notes with Microsoft.
BSA’s members include Adobe, Apple Computer, Autodesk, Bentley Systems, Compaq, IBM, Intel and Microsoft.
The organization has also signed an agreement with the Contact Center Association of the Philippines that binds members of the organization to submit themselves to regular software audits to ensure that they are complying with the copyright law and to set an example of good corporate governance.
