BAIS CITY- As I write this article, I’m still in this place popularly known as the city of dolphins and whales. My trip here is courtesy of the regional office of the Department of Tourism headed by director Dawnie Roa. Our group left Cebu last Thursday morning for the Toledo city wharf where we took a two-hour boat trip to San Carlos city in Negros Oriental. From the pier, we then proceeded to Canlaon city.

FARM. After checking in at a penion house, we had an afternoon tour of the Oisca tilapia model farm. This is an ideal place where one could commune with nature and savor the beauty of an unspoiled environment and the magnificent ambiance. However, the Canlaon city tourism council has yet to come up with clear guildelines on entrance fees in order to ensure a sustaining funding or budget for the farm’s daily expenses.

CAVE. Our group also had the chance to visit the Mabinay crystal cave where we were awed by its fantastic stalagmites and stalactites. The cave is only an 8-minute trek from the national road. We wore hard hats with lights as it was so dark inside the cave. However, it has no security men to guard it from vandals andother lawless elements. We suggested to Mabinay town leaders to address this concern if they also want the cave to continue attracting domestic and foreign tourists daily. Prior to our cave exploration we had a sumptuous picnic lunch at the Mabinay spring park.

RESORT. From Mabinay, our group proceeded to the Tirambulo Highland Resort owned by Ed Solon who also happens to be one of the local politicians of Mabinay town. The resort is so attractive but it had to temporarily close down due th the current economic situation. The 48-hectare resort has six man-made lagoons. Its temporary closure started two years ago since its formal opening in 1980. Solon assured us he will reopen the resort once the economy improves and the Negros Oriental tourism business perks up again. It’s so sayang if the Tirambulo Highland Resort can’t recoup its huge investment. We suggested to Solon to offer local rates and not rely or depend on foreigners. By all means, the resort should reopen soon.
