Companies’ help highlighted in disability awareness week
TO RAISE public awareness on persons with disability (PWDs), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will be observing the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.
A series of activities this week will focus on government and non-government organizations programs for PWDs.
DSWD specialist for PWDs and older persons Shalaine Marie Sun-Lucero told Sun.Star Cebu they are also encouraging the private sector to support their activities.
As of now, 21 private companies are supporting DSWD programs by employing PWDs, but many companies still need prodding.
As of the moment, there are 21 private companies that have shown their support for PWDs trained by DSWD.
The hired PWDs are graduates of the Area Vocational and Rehabilitation Center of DSWD.
Certain privileges are given to a PWD, but he must meet the qualifications for the position he applies for.
“They are employed as regular employees, but they are also made to undergo the regular screening process as any regular job applicant.” Lucero said.
Full schedule
This week, exhibits, forums and medical missions by different government agencies for the PWDs will be conducted.
A sportsfest will also be held at the Mandaue City Sports Center, in preparation for the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian National Paralympics, which the Philippines will be hosting.
