Yelling at kid leads to case of child abuse

SHOUTING at a special child of legal age earned a resident of Pasil, Cebu City a criminal case with the Regional Trial Court.

Jeremias Asis allegedly shouted at a special child when the latter moved his tricycle. He also accused the child of stealing parts of his vehicle.

Prosecution witnesses said that last July 15, the child moved Asis’ parked tricycle, after a jeepney driver asked the child to help him move the vehicle so the jeepney could also park.

When Asis arrived, he allegedly berated the child for moving his tricycle and told the child he was “pabuang-buang ug pa-amaw-amaw” (pretending to be stupid).

When the child’s father tried to intervene, Asis allegedly accused the child of stealing.

Asis, however, denied the charge, saying he did not shout at the child. While he admitted berating the jeepney driver for moving his tricycle, Asis said the child was inside the Pasil Sports Complex when he shouted at the driver.

Despite Asis’ denial, the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor gave more weight to the allegations of the victim’s witnesses, who identified Asis.

The Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office recommended P10,000 as bail.

The complainant is already of legal age, but Asis was still charged with child abuse, because the law considers a child those who are of legal age but are “unable to fully take care of themselves of protect themselves from abuse, neglect, cruelty, exploitation or discrimination because of a physical or mental disability.” GN
