Garcia tows DBC to finals win By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
TOURNAMENT Most Valuable Player Jose Luis Garcia showed the way for the Don Bosco College Greywolves in beating the erstwhile-undefeated University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, 69-65, for the 2nd ML Kwarta Padala Cup Summer League championship yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Garcia, who normed 14.9 points per game coming into the championship, went 3-of-4 from the free- throw line but drilled two triples in the final quarter to shift the momentum to the Bosconians, who played without main man Christopher Sumalinog.
“It was the determination of the boys. They played their hearts out and we couldn’t have won the championship if not for their hard work,” said Don Bosco coach Rudy Enterina.
This is Enterina’s second championship in the inter-school caging organized by the M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation.
3-pointers
Uriel Lim turned on the heat after nailing a triple with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter, giving Don Bosco a 54-53 lead before Adrianne Alforque drained his own triple to regain the lead for the Carolinians 17 seconds later. Garcia then swished in a rainbow 3-pointer, and the tide completely went to the Greywolves’ shores.
USC tied the game on a putback by Kevin Jake Arriesgado off Peter Alexander Te’s split free throws with 2:12 to go.
With 40.6 seconds left, Don Bosco’s 6-foot-3 power forward Jose Roberto Acha, who helped fill the scoring slack left by Sumalinog with 15 points, completed a three-point play that broke a 64-all deadlock, the last time USC tied the game.
USC came into the game with seven straight wins, but with two players with fever: Guard Francis Luigi Bercede and Giovanni Padillo, the Baby Warriors lacked the needed scoring against the determined Greywolves.
USC missed Padillo’s 12.2 ppg and Bercede’s hustle and almost eight points average when it mattered most.
Earlier, Te and Alforque combined with MVP candidate John Rafael Flanco in battling Don Bosco, but their efforts were overshadowed by the Greywolves balanced offense.
Turnovers
USC’s last taste of lead was at 61-59 on Bercede’s undergoal stab with 4:01 left before Garcia scored the next five points to put Don Bosco ahead, 64-61, before a string of turnovers did them in. The most crucial happened with 46.6 seconds left that led to Acha’s three-point play.
Joining Garcia in the Mythical 5 selection were Arriesgado, Acha, Flanco and USP’s Earvin Dennis Ferraren.
Meanwhile, the University of Southern Philippines Baby Panthers bagged the third-place trophy after beating University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, 78-66.
UV was hot early with Cañada scoring 10 first-quarter points for a 22-17 lead but USP dominated the next three quarters, outscoring the heftier Baby Lancers.
