National team stays active

THE RP Men’s team will continue its preparations despite the suspension meted out by the International Basketball Federation (Fiba-World) as it joins three international tournaments this month and the next.

After their stint in the Las Vegas Global Hoops Summit on July 16-21, national team coach Chot Reyes and members of the national pool will take part in the Jones Cup, said to be the toughest among the three international forays of Reyes and his boys.

The Jones Cup on July 23-30 pits national teams from Kazakhstan, Russia, Germany, Qatar, Japan, Chinese-Taipei, the Australian Institute of Sports team and Korean junior team.

Games schedule

The RP team’s schedule of games in the Jones Cup includes an opener against Qatar on July 23, followed by matches against Kazakhstan (July 24), Korea (July 25), India (July 26), Australia (July 27), Japan (July 28), Russia (July 29), Taiwan (July 30) and a US selection (July 31).

The Philippine Jones Cup team will be made up of some players from the Las Vegas team, while the bulk will be filled by San Miguel and Talk ‘N Text players.

The third tournament is the Brunei Invitational, set sometime in August.

The squad’s international stints are sponsored by San Miguel Corp. and have PBA Commissioner Noli Eala’s blessing.

“We will continue on with the program since the rationale is to get these players together for a long time. We wanted to avoid the practice of forming teams just a few months from the tournament,” Reyes said.

Both the SMC and Eala agree with Reyes to keep the pool ready in the event the Fiba lifts the suspension, which would allow the Philippines to play in the ABC. JSV
