World Pool in RP?
THE World Pool Championships (WPC) in pool-manic Philippines? That would be quite an achievement, but it won’t be happening yet.
Rumors of the Philippines hosting the 2006 WPC had been on billiard forums all over the Internet and was sparked when Matchroomsport first offered the World Pool League to Puyat Sports in 2002.
“Mr. Puyat refused to accept such proposal since the country then was experiencing political unrest and economic slowdown,” a post on easypooltutor.com said.
$1M needed
Sun.Star Cebu sent an e-mail to Ted Lerner and commentator Bob Guerrero in Kaohsiung regarding the rumors and both said they haven’t heard of the offer.
“I don’t know if they actually offered the tournament to Puyat. The bottom line with the WPC is money. It takes something close to $1 million to buy the sponsorship rights.
“It doesn’t need to be Puyat. It can be anyone who comes up with the money. If you come up with the million, you can bring it to Cebu,” Lerner said in an e-mail message.
A million dollars or P56 million – more if another fluctuation occurs – is tough to come by. But hosting WPC has its upside.
Advantage
It will help lots of Filipino players get a shot at the biggest tournament in the world since they don’t have to travel to qualify, while the fans can rub elbows with the biggest names.
Among those who did not join this year were Leonardo Andam, Ramil Gallego and Jose “Amang” Parica.
In Taiwan, some 10 Taiwanese got past the qualifying stages. ML
