Z Gorres to fight hard-hitting Thai

AFTER nearly three months of training at Buddy McGirt’s Gym in Miami, Florida, the sensational Z “The Dream” Gorres will see action against hard-hitting Thai Deeden Kengkarun on July 23 at the Makati Coliseum.

Gorres, who quickly disposed of, US-based Filipino boxer Glenn Donaire in just 2:03 of the first round last March 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, will fight against a dangerous Deeden, who once held the Pan-Asian Boxing Association light-flyweight title.

Kengkarun lost his belt to Cebuano Marvin “The Kid” Tampus in May 2002 via a seventh-round knockout and lost again to Tampus in an effort to reclaim the WBA-affiliated regional belt in November 2002.

The 27-year-old Thai holds a decent record of 22 wins against 10 loses and two draws with 13 KO wins.

Gorres will try to exorcise his bad luck at the Makati Coliseum. It was in June 2003 when the southpaw ALA Boy lost his first professional fight via a ninth-round TKO to journeyman Edgar Rodrigo for the RP flyweight title.

Seven-win streak

In February 2002, Gorres also figured in a technical draw with another wily veteran in Randy Mangubat in a 10-round encounter. Gorres suffered a nasty cut above his right eye that forced referee Ferdinand Estrella to stop the fight at the 1:35 mark of the fist round.

Since that loss to Rodrigo, Gorres has strung up seven victories to sport a 19-1-1 win-loss-draw record with 11 KOs.

Kengkarun will be Gorres’ third Thai opponent. Sairung Suwanasil survived a 10-round duel with the former amateur standout last September in Mandaue City before Gorres handed Chaiyong Sakkreerin his first defeat last December, also after 10 rounds of pummeling.

After a three-week preparation with McGirt before fighting in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales superfight, Gorres was able to made short work of Donaire. The 22-year old Gorres is also co-managed by the influential Rudy Salud. RCM
