Speak out: Act with sobriety, courage By Redemptorist Province of Cebu
July 11 was the 20th anniversary of the abduction and disappearance of Fr, Rudy Romano, a Redemptorist missionary priest.
He was a victim of an unjust and violent society that does not respect the rule of law.
It is painful to note that after 20 years, we are still denied justice and truth. Why did they abduct him? What did they do to him? Who are responsible for his disappearance?
Meanwhile, as a nation, we are again confronted with a serious situation where justice, peace, truth and the rule of law are abused and mocked.
There are people accusing President Arroyo of cheating in the last presidential elections. They say she has lost the moral authority to govern our country and thus should now resign.
Is this strident clamor a just solution? Is this the best alternative to resolve the present crisis? Will it promote the interests of the majority of the suffering poor?
As Redemptorist missionaries, we look at the situation from the perspective and interest of the poor and the most abandoned whom we are sent to serve.
They are the masses already burdened by inflation, unemployment, corruption and too much partisan politics in our government. They are the poor electorates used and abused by power-hungry politicians. They are the ones who will be hurt and will suffer most if the situation deteriorates into chaos and violence.
While steps have to be undertaken to resolve this political crisis, we must continue to critically search for the truth: Who are the accusers? What are the specific crimes the President allegedly committed? What are the motives behind these accusations?
We must discover the truth and understand its meaning, especially its relevance to our faith and to the lives of the poor. It is in this light that, as Redemptorist, we firmly believe that any solution to this crisis must be guided by truth and should be in accordance with the rule of law. We are a nation of laws and not dictated by those with selfish interest and evil motives.
We call on our fellow Filipinos to remain vigilant against any attempt to sow confusion and disorder. Together, let us pray and discern our actions with sobriety, courage and faith.
Christ is the way, the truth and the life. Only in living the truth we can find our way to Christ. We proclaim the truth by doing what is just to others. Where there is truth and justice, charity and peace are also present.
